This digital sculpture highlights the world cultural heritage in a contemporary style, allowing the renowned masterpiece to be easily accessed by the Chinese public.
The Dance is a representational masterpiece inheriting the world cultural heritage in the urban sculpture history in China. In the style of avant-garde digital sculpture, the renowned, cross-disciplinary Chinese contemporary artist Wang Kaifang revives the monumental Fauvist masterpiece The Dance created by Henri Matisse over 100 years ago. Wang Kaifang reinterprets Matisse’s original work with his unique artistic expression, subliming its original, expressive colors, lines, spatial rhythm and energy to reflect the majestic Oriental philosophy that man is an integral part of the nature.
Symbolizing harmony and unity in the flourishing age, The Dance by Wang Kaifang represents a milestone of the public art in Wu Sheng in the new era. It forges the great energy field of the urban city as well as the cohesive affinity of the people. With the dynamics between the Chinese audience and the globally renowned masterpiece, the sculpture allows the mutual understanding, respect and fusion of the Oriental and Occidental cultures. Via taking the classical painting off the altar of the museum and reviving it in the public space, Wang Kaifang makes the classical masterpiece more accessible to the public and endeavors to propel the evolution of civilization and world peace via art.
The sculpture won the 2015 China Environmental Art Award.
